Rectal cancer is the cancer of the rectum/colon. Stage O and I are curable with the help of surgical removal of the cancerous tumor. However, as cancer advances, the patient should undergo chemotherapy and radiation therapy to eliminate the cancer risk. One must know that the earlier your doctor detects colorectal cancer, the easier it becomes to cure the disease.
When a patient suffering from stage IV rectal cancer consulted Dr. Jay Chokshi, reports revealed that cancer had metastasized (spread) to the liver and large intestine. Close to 40% of his liver was damaged due to the advancement of the disease. The doctor also found visible signs of damage to the intestine, making the treatment and ensuing surgery complicated.
Dr. Jay Chokshi suggested chemotherapy treatment which showed promising results, thus, allowing everyone to be optimistic about a possible successful clinical outcome. On 29th November 2021, the doctor performed simultaneous Liver & Rectum Resection at the Sunshine Global Hospital in Surat.
SUPRA MAJOR SURGERY: LIVER AND RECTUM RESECTION OPERATION
Colonoscopy: Ulceroproliferative lesion present at 15 cm from anal verge.
Biopsy: Well-differentiated invasive Adenocarcinoma.
CECT Abdomen: 7cm long circumferential wall thickening at Rectosigmoid junction with pericolic fat involvement with enlarged nodes. Two metastatic lesions (17 & 23mm) in segments: II & IV of the liver.
Surgery: Left Hepatectomy with Low Anterior Resection.
In the past, such a complicated supra-major surgery involving simultaneous left hepatectomy and low anterior resection would have been impossible. But, due to advancements in the medical field and the expertise of the GI surgeon, stage IV rectum cancer can be treatable.
DO NOT LOSE HOPE!
When a cancerous tumor is detected late, curative surgery becomes difficult in most cases. But it does not mean you must lose hope. Every patient is different, and the treatment modality will change depending on several factors. When you have serious complications, do not feel dejected. Discuss your options with a reputed colorectal cancer surgeon.
DOCTOR’S NOTE!
“I am happy to know that the patient is recovering well. I wish him good health and happiness. I am glad that he and his family trusted my abilities as a liver and colon cancer specialist.
One must note that although stage IV rectal cancer with liver metastasis can be difficult to treat, it is not impossible. Consult a reputed GI surgeon to understand your options.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of colon cancer or digestive distress, do not ignore the symptoms. Opt for colon cancer screening regularly and discuss your risks with the doctor.”
