The laparoscopic procedure of Heller’s Myotomy is a minimally-invasive procedure that will open the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve between the lower end of the esophagus and the stomach). Gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when the stomach acids back up into the esophagus and irritate the lining of the organ. To treat the gastroesophageal reflux disease, the doctor will conduct a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication. 7. GASTRIC CANCER OR CANCER OF THE STOMACH

Gastric cancers or gastric adenocarcinomas can be divided into two categories: Cancers of gastric cardia (Often occurring in the upper region of the stomach near the esophagus) and non-cardia gastric cancers (occurring in the mid and distal part of the stomach).

• Radical (D2) Distal Gastrectomy – Also called antrectomy, it removes the lower part of the stomach that is affected by corrosive strictures. The doctor will attach the remaining part to the opening of the small intestine.
• Radical (D2) Total Gastrectomy – If the cancer has spread to the entire stomach and its adjacent organs, the doctor may have to perform a total gastrectomy to remove the stomach, nearby lymph nodes, parts of the small intestine and sections of the esophagus.
